All Eyes on My Morning Jacket performing “Gideon”

31 01 2008

mmj.jpg

For those of you that attended Lollapalooza this past year, you might remember that during MMJ’s set, Perry Ferrell popped out and requested that fans use their cameras/cell phones/videocameras/whatever and record their performance. With the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra in tow, the plan was to use all the fan footage for a movie that will be used later on. While the movie premiered on CurrentTV a couple days ago, you can now see the footage from My Morning Jacket performing "Gideon" using the link below. If nothing else, this should whet your appetite until more info comes out about their next album, Evil Urges.

“Everyone Nose” it’s the new N*E*R*D

29 01 2008

nerd.jpg

I’ll admit that I’ve never been a big fan of Pharell, particularly when it comes to his contributions with N*E*R*D (if I hear one more song based on one of his stupid piano chord progression it’s over), but this song has some definite funk appeal. Per usual, you can throw logic out the window when listening, as the majority of lyrics go no further than "All the girls standing in the line for the bathroom" (poignant, isn’t it?) and other random outbursts, but the rambunctious beats and throwback sax hits somehow make it worthwhile. So, without further adieu, here’s the latest N*E*R*D song, from the upcoming album N.3.R.D. which should be released sometime this spring.

Shortlist Finalists Announced

28 01 2008

Now in its seventh year, the Shortlist organization has announced the ten nominees for the 2007 Shortlist Music Prize. Selected by a panel compromised mainly of musicians and critics, the only criteria is that all nominated albums must have sold less than 500,000 copies. With the list pared down from the original 54, let’s take a look at the final nominees:

  • Arcade Fire Neon Bible
  • Burial Untrue
  • Feist The Reminder
  • Justice
  • LCD Soundsystem Sound of Silver
  • M.I.A. Kala
  • Spoon Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga
  • Stars In Our Bedroom After the War
  • Wilco Sky Blue Sky
  • Working for a Nuclear Free City Businessmen and Ghosts

The Shortlist Awards have always been underrated despite almost always selecting some of the most highly acclaimed albums of the year. This year’s winner would appear to be either LCD Soundsystem or Arcade Fire, with Justice as the dark horse possibility.

New Gnarls Barkley!

28 01 2008

gnarlsbarkley.jpg

Danger Mouse and Cee-Lo are at it again. Collectively known as Gnarls Barkley, the super duo that brought you "Crazy"(which bombarded civilization  until we all became a little crazy ourselves) now have a new song for you from their upcoming album. Entitled "Run," the song is mighty spiffy and doesn’t feel like rehashed material in any way. Give it a spin and see what you think. Their new album The Odd Couple comes out in April.

Scarlett Johansson announces her debut album

25 01 2008

scarlettjohansson.jpg

Yes, you read that correctly, Scarlett Johansson is making music. Not just any kind of music, however, as her album will consist of ten Tom Waits covers. If that alone doesn’t intrigue you, she also has wrote one of the tracks herself. TV on the Radio’s Dave Sitek produced the album, while she also collaborated with Yeah Yeah Yeah’s guitarist Nick Zinner, among others. Anywhere I Lay My Head will be released May 20.

B-Side of the Week: “My Third House” by Kings of Leon

25 01 2008

oncall.jpg This is a new feature here at Fuzzy Thoughts, hope you enjoy it. Every week, I’ll highlight a particular b-side (any track released on the back end of an EP or various artist release [excluding soundtracks]) that I feel is worth some recognition and give a little blurb on it. This week’s selection is “My Third House” by Kings of Leon, a song that has been getting repeated play by yours truly of late. What makes it a good song? Quite simple really, as frontman Caleb Followill’s vocals are perfect all the way through, with his rapid fire delivery matching the intense drums and crunching guitar. It gets even better with lead guitarist Matthew Followill’s outstanding jam towards the end of the song. Highly recommended.

Fuzzy Bits: Guillemots discuss new album; Could Nas be on the way out?

24 01 2008
  • Guillemots, coming off their bewildering debut Through the Windowpane, have announced that their sophomore album, Red, will be released March 24 (hopefully that means a March 25 release for those in the states). The lead single is titled “Get Over It”and will be released a week before, coinciding with their abbreviated UK tour. Here’s the full tracklisting for the album:

Kriss Kross
Big Dog
Falling Out of Reach
Get Over It
Clarion
Last Kiss
Cockateels
Words
Standing on the Last Star
Dont Look Down
Take Me Home

  • Nas might be dropped by Def Jam if he doesn’t get rid of his stupidly titled upcoming album. Titled Ni**** (you can fill in the blanks there), the album has already caused a marketing headache with a large number of retailers even telling the label that they would never sell an album with such a title. Here’s hoping that Def Jam does drop Nas, as people have been giving him way too much slack for too long. Yes, he released Illmatic, largely regarded as a classic hip-hop album, but Nas has relied far too heavily on controversy to make a point that isn’t really worth making. Should anything change on this situation, you’ll be among the first to know.

Bond 22 finally has a title

24 01 2008

Quantum of Solace. That is the unfortunate title of the upcoming installment of the James Bond series. Marc Forster, who directed The Kite Runner, Stranger than Fiction, Finding Neverland and Monster’s Ball, is at the helm of this project with Daniel Craig returning as Bond. Playing the villain is French actor Mathieu Amalric (who was most recently in The Diving Bell and the Butterfly) with Olga Kurylenko (recently starred in Hitman) featured as the "Bond girl" this time around. It’s also worth noting that Gemma Arterson, originally rumored to be the "Bond girl" in this flick, will instead play the role of Agent Fields, thus working alongside Craig’s Bond character. With all that information at hand, one should hope that the film is much better than the title, and perhaps will be far less melodramatic than Casino Royale. The initial release date is set for November 7 2008.
