Early Bird Lollapalooza Tickets Go On Sale Today!

31 03 2009

Lollapalooza

Yes, it’s that time again– and if you’re sold on the headliners it’d probably be a good idea to buy the tickets for cheap while you can. Like last year, the tickets will sell for $175, and once these are sold out the prices will increase gradually. Tickets go on sale at 10am Central and can be purchased at the Lollapalooza website.

Now for those that are wondering about the lineup (which hasn’t been finalized yet), here are the headliners:

Beastie Boys, Tool, The Killers, Kings of Leon, Jane’s Addiction, and Depeche Mode

While there are a number of other bands that have also been confirmed, the hot topic as of late how factual this “leaked” list of 60 bands are over at Faronheit. If it’s even remotely accurate, this could be one of the deeper music festivals of the summer.

More New Doves- “Winter Hill”

27 03 2009

Here’s another new tune from the upcoming Kingdom of Rust album to be released April 7. A much better track than the lead single “Jetstream,” “Winter Hill” is equally dense and slightly twisted, while maintaining a bit more of a familiar Doves sound.

Tool and The Killers added as Lolla Headliners

24 03 2009

While there has been some speculation that there could be six headliners this year (thus ridding an unopposed headliner), we know at the very least that Tool and The Killers will be taking the big stages along with the previously mentioned Jane’s Addiction, Beastie Boys, and Depeche Mode. If there is another headliner, it could very well be Kings of Leon, who were also mentioned in the last Lolla announcement posted a few weeks ago.

Other noteworthy artists added are:
Lou Reed
The Decemberists
Andrew Bird
Ra Ra Riot

Pete Yorn’s Back and Fourth to be Released June 23

15 03 2009

Pete Yorn is finally back after his 2006 release of Nightcrawler. The new release, Back and Fourth, is particularly noteworthy as it is the first time that Yorn worked full-time with a backing band, rather than attempting to play most of the instruments himself. This seems to have given him the time to greatly vamp up his lyrics, not only returning to the occasionally terrific-lyricism that he showed on his debut Musicforthemorningafter, but also writing deeply personal lyrics unlike anything he has done before.

Below is the tracklist for Back and Fourth, which will be released June 23 on Columbia Records.

  1. Don’t Wanna Cry
  2. Paradise Cove
  3. Close
  4. Social Development
  5. Shotgun
  6. Last Summer
  7. Thinking of You
  8. Country
  9. Four Years
  10. Long Time

As a preview, here are a couple MP3s from his upcoming album. The lead single “Don’t Want to Cry” and “Shotgun.”

Pitchfork Unveil Lineup and a New Wrinkle

10 03 2009

Well, well, well… looks like Pitchfork may just upstage Lollapalooza this year. The Chicago-based media site, which has become (for better or worse) synonymous with indie music , has cultivated a lineup that seems too good to be true. If the headliners aren’t enough, fans will choose the setlist for the four bands that play on Friday night—how’s that for an idea? While many more artists are to come, below is what Pitchfork has officially unveiled thus far. Tickets go on sale March 13.

Friday July 17
Built to Spill
The Jesus Lizard
Yo La Tengo
Tortoise

Saturday July 18
The National
Pharoahe Monch
The Pains of Being Pure at Heart
and more

Saturday July 18
Grizzly Bear
The Walkmen
Vivian Girls
and more

Tor and Sufjan Stevens Bring the Illinoize

9 03 2009

While these kinds of mixes generally yield iffy results, Montreal-based producer Tor actually does a very admirable job of combining Sufjan Stevens’ work with a variety of hip-hop acts. Standing at just seven tracks, there’s no filler here whatsoever and the songs blend together naturally, never feeling forced. The tracklist is below with a link to download this free (and highly recommended) mix at the bottom:

  1. Tor / Sufjan Stevens – Star of Wonder / None Shall Pass (f. Aesop Rock)
  2. Tor / Sufjan Stevens – Dumb I Sound / ATLiens (f. Outkast)
  3. Tor / Sufjan Stevens – John Wayne Gacy Jr. / Specialize (f. Pete Rock & CL Smooth)
  4. Tor / Sufjan Stevens – The Tallest Man / I Like It (f. Grand Puba)
  5. Tor / Sufjan Stevens – Kill / Any Type of Way (f. Big Daddy Kane & DJ Premier)
  6. Tor / Sufjan Stevens – Night Zombies / Talkin’ My Shit (f. Brother Ali)
  7. Tor / Sufjan Stevens – The Dress Looks Nice On You / Make You Feel That Way (f. Gift Of Gab)

New St. Vincent: “The Strangers”

9 03 2009

As much as Fuzzy Thoughts loves St. Vincent and her debut album, Marry Me, the opening track from her new album Actor far exceeds even the lofty expectations she set by such a wondrous debut. “The Strangers” is a lush, vivid piece of orchestral pop, with the instruments and her stunning vocals soaring over a relentless beat– a song that becomes increasingly edgy before giving way to a fuzzed-out mini jam and returning to its nearly utopian beginning. Listen to “The Strangers” below!

Actor will be released on May 5 via 4AD.
