Fuzzy Five: Five Gifts for the Last Second Shopper

22 12 2008

So you’ve let it come down to the wire, and you still don’t know what to get that special (or not so special) person for Christmas. I can’t guarantee any miracles, but this list of five gifts should at least prevent you from being put in the dog house or receiving coal on an annual basis.

In no particular order:

Movies

  • The Alfred Hitchcock Premiere Collection

This sensational box set from MGM is noteworthy in that it includes the extremely rare classic Rebecca, in addition to most of Hitchcock’s other early work. This includes Spellbound, Notorious, and Sabotage. A must have for any classic cinema fan, especially fans of Hitchcock.

  • The Wire: The Complete Series

One of the most talked about shows from the HBO camp in history, The Wire lives on through this box set. Sure to find its way into plenty of homes this holiday season, The Wire is an inner-city drama with its reputation built on the show’s unrelenting realism.

  • John Adams

When you’re nominated for 23 Emmys, you’re bound to get tons of public attention, not that John Adams really needed much help—particularly given a cast headed by Paul Giamatti and Laura Linney. HBO hit another home run with this series, a show that will win over not only history film buffs but also more casual viewers as well.

  • The Sopranos: The Complete Series

Not much more can be said about the Sopranos (I’m sure there are still some people out there that are getting over the finale). However, this box set is certainly worthwhile for the folks that resisted buying single season DVD copies. With over 3.5 hours never-before-seen footage, CD soundtracks, episode guides, and much more, it’s enough to give even the biggest Sopranos fan their needed fix.

  • Wall-E/The Dark Knight

The two biggest movies of 2008 deserve the tie in the final spot. You can’t go wrong with either movie this year (especially on Blu Ray).

Music

      • Bob Dylan The Bootleg Series, vol. 8: Tell Tale Signs

If compilations like this were counted on the Fuzzy Thoughts top albums list, it certainly would’ve been near the top. If you’re looking to spoil the most discerning of Dylan fans, splurge and buy the three CD box set. This version includes a bonus CD with 12 extra tracks, a book full of Dylan’s singles artwork and a 60 page booklet featuring photos, essays and more.

      • Nina Simone To Be Free

This definitive box sets spans nearly forty years and includes 54 songs and 8 previously unreleased tracks in addition to a DVD showcasing her live performances.

      • Roy Orbison The Soul of Rock & Roll

An exhaustingly comprehensive set, this 107-song, four disc collection is a must for all who want to own a piece of rock and roll history.

    • Led Zeppelin Definitive Collection (Mini LP Replica)

In honor of their fortieth anniversary, Rhino released this novel box set that not only includes every Led Zeppelin album released, but are replicated in the form of remastered CDs replicated to look like the original LPs, artwork and all.

      • The Doors Perception

Aside from the clever, door-shaped packaging, Perception not only covers all the albums, but also has a companion DVD for every release that features 5.1 surround sound mixing.

New video from The Kills: “Tape Song”

12 11 2008

Featuring footage from The Kills/The Raconteurs US tour, the video for “Tape Song” is definitely random if nothing else. Look for a few scenes with Jack White, in addition to weird hats, toy guns, guitar poses and awkward dances.

New Gnarls Barkley video: “Mystery Man”

8 11 2008

The collective sometimes-genius known as Gnarls Barkley are back again with a really cool video for a song off of their new Who’s Gonna Save My Soul? EP. While the song has a decided B-side feel to it (it comes off as strangely incomplete), the production is a bit more impressive and raw than anything that managed to make its way onto The Odd Couple. The EP will be released on November 11.

New video from Beck: “Modern Guilt”

20 10 2008

Now here’s an intriguing video from Beck– looks as though he’s been watching a lot of German Expressionism lately based on the results of this video. It doesn’t necessarily do anything for the song, but it’s relatively humorous nonetheless.

New Kanye West video: “Love Lockdown”

11 10 2008

Giving into the fact that this song just won’t go away, here’s the video for Kanye West’s latest hit “Love Lockdown” as premiered on Ellen.  Somehow I never thought the song had anything to do with African tribesmen (or American Psycho for that matter), so glad to see the video clear that up. 808’s and Heartbreak will be released on
November 25, not December 16 as was previously reported.

New Bob Dylan Video, “Dreamin of You”

8 09 2008

A while back I posted the free audio single from Bob Dylan’s upcoming Bootleg Series release Tell Tale Signs, now here’s the corresponding video. Starring Harry Dean Stanton (most well known nowadays for his role as Roman Gant in the HBO TV series Big Love), this video is yet another personification of the Dylanesque loner that we’re all pretty familiar with– it’s still quite entertaining though.

Video of the Week: Wilco & Fleet Foxes Perform “I Shall Be Released”

4 09 2008

Wilco and Fleet Foxes singing together? Sounds like a match made in heaven. Performing the Bob Dylan standard, "I Shall Be Released?" Even better. Yes, if this video doesn’t set you right, there’s clearly something wrong. Go to the two minute mark to check out Jeff Tweedy’s superb falsetto– one of the definite highlights from the video.

New Video: Raphael Saadiq “Love that Girl”

30 08 2008

For those of you that aren’t yet familiar with Raphael Saadiq– he’s the former member of popular R&B band Tony! Toni! Toné! who also has had his share of successes as a producer, in addition to being an artist. If you can’t remember back to the 80’s, you may be more familiar with Saadiq from songs such as “Still Ray,” “Be Here (feat. D’Angelo)”– both off of his debut solo release Instant Village. Beyond that, his song “Get Involved” featuring Q-Tip, was another minor hit.

The point is that Saadiq has always been a grossly under appreciated artist whose critical acclaim never came close to matching his commercial success. With all the hype going into his latest album however, that could possibly change. Perhaps thanks to his girlfriend Joss Stone, Saadiq has gone old-school with The Way I See It. Unlike most other albums that simply have a “retro”-feel, Saadiq’s songs sound less like a rip off and more like he’d went into a time machine to make this album.

All that being said, here’s Raphael Saadiq’s new music video for the song “Love that Girl,” it’s quite a dandy. The Way I See It hits stores September 16th.

New Kings of Leon video “Sex on Fire”

27 08 2008

These guys are just on a roll. First they release the epic single on iTunes and on their website and now they’ve released a video that manages to match the powerful single. The religious undertones of the video are hard to ignore, and as a whole, the presentation is pretty slick. Check out the video below. Only by the Night will be released September 23.

New My Morning Jacket video: “Touch Me I’m Going to Scream, Pt. 2″

18 08 2008

Remember that book you read when you were a wee little one called Where the Wild Things Are? If you do, this video should register pretty high on the nostalgia meter. If not, well, then let this pop culture reference float above your head and consult your nearest library and/or Wikipedia upon viewing this clever video. While I already enjoy this song from My Morning Jacket’s latest Evil Urges, it matches the video so well that it makes me appreciate the song more. Check it out below:
